Taxes, bonus

The registration tax includes an environmental parameter. The owner has to pay what is called an "eco-malus". It is calculated depending on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle starting at 146 g/km.

Incentives for CNG vehicles adoption
Until June 2022, for every Walloon citizen that purchases a natural gas vehicle, the Walloon distribution network operator gets a bonus of 500 €

Since 2020, cities have been authorized to set up LEZ in Wallon to reduce high-polluting vehicles circularing. The requirements are based on fuel and Euro norm and the category of vehicles. All vehicles, excluding light-duty vehicles and heavy-duty vehicles, are authorized. For the latter, specific limits are defined. Since 2022,  only diesel vehicles of Euro norm 5 or more and petrol, LNG and CNG vehicles of Euro norm 3 or more are authorized in LEZ. General exemptions can be granted depending on several requirements. Stricter limits have been established for 2025. It will be Euro 6 or more for diesel vehicles, and for the others, Euro 4 or more.

Mobility for 2030

By 2023, the Walloon region will gradually enforce measures to ban certain vehicles. It aims to decarbonize the vehicle fleet progressively. Stricter limits are set almost every year until 2030 (excluding 2027 and 2029). By 2030, only Euro 6 (or more Euro norm to come) vehicles will be authorized.

The measures are aligned with the vision of mobility developed for 2030.

FAST: vision of Mobility for 2030

The Walloon region has developed a framework for the mobility transition towards 2030. It sets objectives and defines the view of the mobility demand for the region to reach the main goals. It should help reduce emissions by 35% by 2030. The objectives are divided into two themes: passenger and freight mobility. For each category, it sets goals for the mobility demand by 2030. For instance, cycling should represent up to 5% of the mobility demand (per km drive) compared to 1% in 2017.
